It begins with two wooden boats the schooner designed by L. Francis Herreshoff and Bruce Kirby’s sharpie ketch. From these two float tales of then and now – stories of sail and sea in the Australian south, of design and artistic craftsmanship, builders, teacher-mentors, sprung planks, loss and the rescue of ageing boats. Like an ocean meanders, each tale breaks out from the main current, taking the reader on a sinuous journey from New England in the USA to the ‘inland sea’ of Port Phillip, across Bass Strait to Tasmania and the Southern Ocean.
In the South Tales of Sail and Yearning eBook Geoff Heriot
A book for those with salt water mixed with the elixir of nostalgia in equal parts in their veins! The enjoyment of this book also is enhanced if the reader had some familiarity with Bass Strait although any seafarer could be captivated by Heriot's evocative narrative of sail, of wooden boats, of the men who resonate to that dance of wind, wave and woodPerhaps too much emphasis on oceanography, but never-the-less fascinating.

In the South Tales of Sail and Yearning eBook Geoff Heriot Reviews
If you've admired the beauty of wooden ships then this book is a tonic. Mr Heriot takes us on a journey through his experience in life and yachts, particularly hand crafted wooden designs, from the initial sketches to the construction and sailing.
Particularly around Tasmania and Melbourne, but far afield to the origins of classic designs in the US, the author paints a grand picture of the pleasure and peril of messing about in boats.
The diversion into human influence on the climate as seen first hand by sailors is most welcome in this age of anti-science.
While I disagree about the possibility of creating artful designs with computers and CAD, or the use of modern materials, I sympathise with the sentiment expressed.
I commend this book to anyone who has looked longingly out to sea. Beautifully written, often poetic. Thank you. Great stuff!
